Flexibility in execution is a critical component of emergent leadership. Think about it: if your ROI is improvisation, that means you must be able to make decisions on the ground that are in the spirit of the strategy. People can drown in data, paralyzing them and their decision-making. How to avoid this? By thinking conceptually. Technically, this means abstracting information from perceptual data. In actual English, it means being able to concentrate on what matters most despite all the “noise” around you that can distract you and likely divert your focus, and resources, to non-essential issues.
Check out the below link. This TED talk is about the “executive function” in thinking. It’s fascinating because it reinforces, albeit in different terms, the very mental process I describe above. If you are going to be an emergent leader, this is the kind of stuff you need to watch and learn from.
